Isle golfers take part in King Auto State Championship

Big Island high school golfers Noah Otani, Ryder Ng, Jake Otani, Ulukoanui Kailiwai and Noah Okazaki took part in the Hawaii State Junior Golfer Association (HSJGA) King Auto State Championship at Hawaii Prince Golf Club in Ewa Beach.

Noah Otani placed No. 7 to lead the Isle’s golfers — shooting 76 in Round One and an even 72 in the second round, finishing in a three-way tie for Round Two runner-up.

Okazaki tied for No. 10, carding 76 and 75.

Jake Otani (+8, 75, 77, 152) and Ng (+9, 75, 78, 153) placed No. 12 and No. 13, respectively.

Kailiwai shot 81 and 84 to place No. 23 out of the 27 participants.

The Otanis and Ng are all part of Waiakea High School’s 2023 State Champion team.

Vulcans land 119 athletes on Academic All-PacWest team

The University of Hawai’i at Hilo landed 119 student-athletes on the Pacific West Conference 2022-23 Academic All-PacWest Team released Wednesday afternoon.

To qualify, student-athletes must have attended UH-Hilo for both semesters this year while achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. They also needed to have appeared in at least one game or contest during their season of play.

This year’s number of 119 student-athletes ranks second only to last year’s record of 133.

Overall, it was a banner year for the conference as 1,811 total student-athletes were named to the Academic Pac-West Team, edging out the previous high of 1,793 from 2021-22.
